Understanding Humidifiers for Babies

BY CIARA LAZATIN MAPA

Perennial nose bleeds. Stuffy noses. Dry, cracked lips. These are some symptoms caused by dry air. Humidity is characterized by the amount of water vapor in the air. High humidity means that the level of water vapor is elevated whereas the opposite is true for low humidity. Too much in either direction can cause multiple problems, especially in homes where children reside.

Levels of Humidity

Low humidity can be associated with dry skin, nosebleeds, dry throats, and itchy eyes.

High humidity, on the other hand, can allow bacteria and mold to grow. These lead to respiratory problems, such as asthma and allergies.

Benefits of Humidifiers

  1. Maintaining optimum humidity levels in your home can help prevent health problems for you and your children.
  2. Smooth, supple skin is another advantage. Why spend thousands on beauty products when all you need is moist air?
  3. Believe it or not, humidity is linked to snoring. Dry air can likely lead to more snores due to the lack of moisture on throat and nasal membranes. This causes them to congest, making it harder to push air in and out.
  4. Reduce static electricity, which is caused by dry air.

Types of Humidifiers

Cool Mist

As the name implies, this type of humidifier produces cool water vapor. There are two kinds – evaporative and ultrasonic. Placing a glass of water on your bedside table before you sleep produces the same result as an evaporative humidifier. The water slowly evaporates throughout the night, keeping your skin hydrated. The only difference is that the humidifier works at a much faster pace. Ultrasonic humidifiers, on the other, utilize high-frequency vibrations to produce extra-fine mist that adds moisture to the room.

Warm Mist

Boiling the water is typically involved in the process of producing warm mist. The steam that is produced from this type of humidifier provides the air with the necessary moisture needed. The most common kind is the vaporizer, which usually includes a small compartment where medicine, such as Vicks, can be poured.

Safety Matters

You can never be too careful with babies and children in your home. Keep these safety tips in mind when purchasing and setting up your humidifier.

  1. Choose a flat surface to place your humidifier on. All humidifiers involve water so spills can occur. On this note, make sure to place it some distance away from your electrical outlets.
  2. Always unplug your humidifier when it is not in use.
  3. Ensure that there is enough water inside your humidifier before you plug them in. This is especially important for warm mist types.
  4. Since this is an electrical appliance, make sure that it is safe from your children and pets.
  5. Warm mist humidifiers use hot, boiling water. It is therefore wise to exercise utmost caution as this can cause burns.

Always clean you humidifiers well when not in use. This minimizes molds and bacterial growth.
